Noche en Blanco, Saturday the 13th
Sooooo, I'm beginning to settle down in Madrid. On Saturday afternoon, my professor, Palmar, called me with a list of home numbers of students that are already here. So I called a few of them to see if they wanted to go to Noche en Blanco with me (which they did).
Noche de Blanco is essentially a huge cultural night where everyone is out at night, going to watch movies, going to museums, listening to music, for free! The streets are blocked off so you can only walk around, and it goes from 9 pm till 7 in the morning. So we all decided to meet at 8:30 near Banco de Espana (a HUGE building which I think is now a post office? Or not a bank anymore...? I can't remember exactly). We went to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes and saw a Goya exhibition, but otherwise, we mostly walked up and down the streets, which had TONS of people.
When we finally decided on a place to eat, we got TOTALLY ignored by the waiter who told us "there was no more bread for the sandwich we ordered" (even though all the customers around us, who came after us, were able to get sandwiches). I'm so glad that they treat us Americans sooo well. A little bit after that, we all dispersed. But just getting a feel for the city was an awesome experience that first night, despite being a bit ignored.
